Miralles; Photos & Collages
Photos & Collages is a public exhibition and retrospective a part of the MIRALLES tribute, operating throughout gallery spaces and schools across Barcelona in 2021. Photos & Collages At the Center d’Arts, Santa Mònica presents the legacy of Enric Miralles as a mediator between photography and collage, through both personal work and the poetics in his own creative process. An introspective journey exploring both Miralles’ architectural projects as well as personal documents providing unique insights into the architect’s travels and life.
The exhibition presents photographs and collages from personal and professional trips; photomontages from the architect’s private archive, previously unpublished and presented publicly here for the very first time. Enric Miralles utilized montage and collage systematically throughout his life in a myriad of applications, fragmenting, reconstructing, and re-deconstructing reality. Inspired by David Hockney (Enric defined his photomontages as “Hockney photos”), Gordon Matta Clark and by surrealist artists, these photomontages experiment with the simultaneity of perception. Each work attempts to break with perspectival traditions and the architects on way of representing and thinking about the physical reality of things.
Photos & Collages is part of the MIRALLES tribute made possible with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya through their Departments of Presidency, Culture and Territory and Sustainability, in collaboration with l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura (ETSAB), the Col·legi Arquitectos de Catalunya (COAC) and the architecture studio Miralles Tagliabue EMBT.
